Adult classes at The Crucible in Oakland taught by Teach me to make teachers

Introduction to Mechanical Sculpture
Dive into mechanical movement and kinetic gesture. This course is an introduction to the physics of such mechanisms as gears, CAM, cranks, rack and pinion, pulleys, reciprocators, ratchets, linkages, and returns. Each week you’ll build new mechanisms and by the last class you’ll learn how these basic mechanical units can be fitted together to create compound mechanisms. This course is designed for students who have little or no experience with kinetics ad the techniques taught can be used in all sorts of projects.

Once a week evening class:
Wednesdays 6-9pm
5 sessions February 1 through March 8 (no class February 15)
$260.00

Electromechanics for Everything
Using the simplest of electronic and mechanical components, you’ll learn to make things spin, twitch, jump, bend, and wiggle. This class will cover switches, buttons, relays, motors, servos, and solenoids, along with some basic analog and digital control circuits, AC/DC current, and safety. The techniques taught in this class are very flexible and can be applied to almost any kind of project, large and small.

Once a week evening class:
Wednesdays 6-9pm
5 sessions February 3 through March 3
$270.00

Arduino
Arduino is a microcontroller board that you can learn to use very quickly. Non-programmers and programmers alike find Arduino easier to put to use than many other similar boards such as Basic Stamps and Phidgets. Arduino is also the least expensive. Arduino can be used to develop interactive objects, taking inputs from a variety of switches or sensors, and controlling a variety of lights, motors, and other physical outputs. Arduino projects can be stand-alone, or they can communicate with software running on your computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP.) The boards can be assembled by hand or purchased pre-assembled; the open-source development environment can be downloaded for free.

Once a week evening class:
Thursdays 6-9pm
5 sessions February 18 through March 18
$260.00

Classes for youth at The Crucible in Oakland taught by Teach me to make teachers

Youth Extreme Gizmos
Learn kinetic techniques to design, engineer, and construct a mechanical sculpture, contraption, or gadget with lights and moving parts. Using new and salvaged components, you will learn how motors, lights, and switches work, how to create mechanical structures, how to create different types of motion, and how to incorporate switches to operate your very own fantastical contraption!

Youth age 8-12 only
5 sessions Monday to Friday 9am-12pm
March 29 through April 2
$215.00

Youth Radical Robots
Build a simple remote-controlled robot. From the wheels up, you’ll create your robot’s shape and personality from salvaged components, mechanisms, and electrical components. You’ll also learn soldering, mechanical construction techniques, and how to remove and repurpose these items. Each student will receive a kit of motors, wheels, and other parts.

Youth age 12-18 only
Once a week evening class:
